2: Dogs&Dindin

In the past this trip has almost always experienced something that delayed the travel to South Dakota. Whether it was an ice storm or a flat tire previous groups have always taken much more than 18 hours to arrive in Mission.

Not our group, we arrived to Mission, SD at around 6:00 am. We couldn't check-in to where we were staying since it was much too early and there isn't a Starbucks in Mission where we could simply pass the time. So, we put the vans in Park and decided to try to take a little napper. When the sunlight woke us we were surrounded by wild dogs. I don't think they were too happy we were invading on their turf.

After waking up we decided to scope out some breakfast at a local eatery called the Antelope Country Inn. I got oatmeal, some delicious french toast, and black coffee. The coffee was essentially colored water and was the beginning of the weak coffee in Mission. During this whole eating experience we could not wake resident Grandma, Natalie, to come join us for a meal. She was too busy catching some "zzz's" in the White Stallion.

After breakfast it was still too early to check in, so we decided to explore St. Francis. This town next to Mission is where the St. Francis Indian School is located and where the Catholic mission is. What a bright colored church!

First group shot!

Caleb teaching us about the medicine wheel. Will explain this later in my posts.

Then we headed back to Tree of Life to check-in to our lovely accommodations. Our group was luck to be able to stay at "Red House" during the week! It slept 12 of us comfortably and the heat was constantly crankin' to kept us warm. The only downside was the one shower (and hot water) for us all to share.

Home Sweet Home.

After getting settled we headed out for supplies for the week. Accordingly, we went to Turtle Creek Crossing, the Tribal grocer. This means that the profits stay on the reservation!

Needless to say we loaded up the carts...four of them to be exact. We then drove back to our home away from home to start on dinner!!

Menu #1
Spaghetti with whole grain noodles
Salad
Garlic Bread

Dinner was delicious, but we couldn't figure out how to turn on the dining room light! So it was a meal with low-romantic lighting.

After clean-up we had reflection and I enjoyed some Green Tea.

Before heading to bed I started the chili so that it would be extra good for Day 3. Chili is one of those dishes that is better leftover (lasagna too I think!).

HUGE can of beans to feed 12 ASBreakers!

Day 2 was a success!
